Turkey Pushes Farther Into Syria As Monitor Says Villagers Killed

KARKAMIS, Turkey, Aug 28 (Reuters) – Turkey’s army and its allies thrust deeper into Syria on Sunday, seizing territory controlled by Kurdish-aligned forces on the fifth day of a cross-border campaign that a monitoring group said had killed at least 35 villagers.

Turkish warplanes roared into northern Syria at daybreak and its artillery pounded what security sources said were sites held by Kurdish YPG militia, after the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported fierce overnight fighting around two villages.

Turkey’s military said 25 Kurdish militants were killed in its air strikes. There was no immediate comment from the YPG, but forces aligned with the Kurdish militia have said it withdrew from the area targeted by Turkey before the offensive.

Turkey, which is also battling Kurdish insurgents on its own soil, sent tanks and troops into Syria on Wednesday to support its Syrian rebel allies. The Turkish-backed forces first seized the Syrian border town of Jarablus from Islamic State militants before pushing south into areas held by Kurdish-aligned militias. They have also moved west towards Islamic State areas.

Turkish officials have openly stated that their goal in Syria is as much about ensuring Kurdish forces do not expand the territory they already control along Turkey’s border, as it is about driving Islamic State from its strongholds.

However, Turkey’s offensive has so far focused mostly on targeting forces allied to the Kurdish-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a coalition that includes YPG, an Observatory source said.

The SDF has support from the United States, which sees the group as an effective Syrian ally against Islamic State. So Turkey’s action against SDF-allied forces puts it odds with a fellow NATO member, adding a further twist to Syria’s complex war that began in 2011 with an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad and has drawn in regional states and world powers.

The Observatory, a Britain-based monitoring group with a network of sources in Syria, said Turkish-allied forces had seized two villages south of Jarablus, Jub al-Kousa and al-Amarna, that were held by militias loyal to the SDF.

The fighting killed 20 civilians in Jub al-Kousa and 15 in al-Amarna, while scores more were wounded, the group said.

HEADING SOUTH

The Observatory said rebels backed by Turkish tanks fought until dawn against rival militias allied to the SDF around al-Amarna. SDF-allied militia damaged three Turkish tanks, it said.

Turkish security sources said warplanes and artillery had hit Kurdish YPG militia sites south of frontier town of Jarablus and towards Manbij, a city captured by Kurdish-aligned SDF this month in a U.S.-backed operation.

Colonel Ahmed Osman, head of the Turkish-backed Sultan Murad rebel group, told Reuters the force was “certainly heading in the direction of Manbij” and hoped to take it days. He also said Turkish-backed rebels were pushing west against Islamic State.

The Ankara government wants to stop Kurdish forces gaining control of an unbroken swathe of Syrian territory on Turkey’s frontier, which it fears could embolden the Kurdish militant group PKK that has waged a three-decade insurgency in Turkey.

A Reuters witness in Karkamis, a Turkish border town, heard jets and artillery bomb Syrian targets. A Turkish official told Reuters even heavier air strikes could follow in coming hours.

Turkey said one of its soldiers was killed on Saturday when a rocket hit a tank that it said came from a YPG-controlled area. It was the first Turkish death reported in the campaign.

Turkey has suffered shock waves from the conflict raging in its southern neighbor, including frequent bomb attacks by Islamic State. The government suspects the jihadist group was behind a blast at a wedding this month that killed 54 people.

President Tayyip Erdogan was expected to visit the site of that wedding attack in Gaziantep, in southeastern Turkey, later on Sunday to pay his respects to families of the victims.

13 Questions That Will Change Your Life

2016-08-18-1471552531-5357259-13QuestionsThatWillChangeYourLifeHP.jpg

When things aren’t going quite the way you’d like them to, it’s often the result of not asking yourself the right questions. Some questions are hard to confront because you’re afraid you won’t get the answer you want, others because you really don’t want to know the answer.

But the best things in life don’t come easily, and turning away from life’s toughest questions is a sure path to mediocrity. I believe that Socrates said it best:

“The unexamined life isn’t worth living.”

Socrates’ observation also applies to business. When Eric Schmidt was CEO of Google, he famously said, “We run this company on questions, not answers.”

Life, like business, runs on questions, not answers. Let’s take a closer look at some of the tough questions we should be asking ourselves regularly.

1. How do people see me differently than I see myself?

Have you ever heard a recording of your voice and thought, “Is that what I really sound like?” Because of the way the sound of the voice travels through the human skull, we never hear ourselves the same way that everybody else hears us. The same is often true for the way we behave. We interpret our behavior in terms of how we think we come across, whereas everyone else sees the real thing. A 360° assessment is a great way to gain this perspective. It gathers feedback that is constructive, anonymous, and accurate. If you forego the 360 and solicit feedback in person, make certain you ask for feedback that is specific, avoiding broad questions and generalizations. For example, you’re more likely to get an honest and accurate answer to, “How well did I handle myself in the meeting when everyone disagreed with me?” than to, “Am I a good boss?” And be careful to show that you’re receptive to the feedback. If you flip out or get defensive every time somebody speaks their mind, they’re going to stop doing it.

2. What/whom did I make better today?

That’s another way of saying, “Leave things better than you found them.” Ending each day by asking yourself what or whom you made better is a great way to keep yourself grounded and focused on what really matters.

3. Am I being true to my values?

Do you ever get that nagging feeling that something is a little off in your life? This often happens when little behaviors creep up on you that violate your values. If spending quality time with your family is one of your primary values, but you keep staying late at work, there’s a conflict. If you want that nagging little voice to go away, you’re going to have to do something about it.

4. If I achieved all of my goals, how would I feel? What can I do to feel that way as I work to achieve them?

The ability to delay gratification in pursuit of your goals is one of the most fundamental prerequisites for success, but delaying gratification doesn’t have to mean being miserable until you cross that finish line. You can achieve more–and have more fun doing it–if you let yourself feel some of that pride and pleasure along the way.

5. What haven’t I taken the time to learn about?

It’s a big world out there, and it’s getting bigger all the time. Scientists have theorized that it once took 1,500 years for the accumulated knowledge in the world to double; now it only takes a year or two. Don’t get caught behind.

6. In what areas of my life am I settling?

When you settle, you accept less than you’re capable of. Sometimes we settle in dead-end jobs. Other times we settle for unhealthy relationships. If you don’t ask yourself where and why you’re settling, it’s hard to stop it.

7. What do I want my life to be like in five years?

Lewis Carroll once said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” The corollary is that, once you have your destination in mind, you can plan your route. Five years is the perfect timeframe: It’s not so far in the future that you can’t imagine yourself there, but it’s not so close that you can’t do anything about it.

8. What would I do if I wasn’t scared?

From a survival perspective, fear has its purpose. It’s what keeps us from sticking our hand in the washing machine or any of the million other things that could get us hurt or killed. But fear has a tendency to get carried away. Instead of keeping you safe, it keeps you from improving your life and living your dreams.

9. Who has qualities that I aspire to develop?

When people have qualities that you admire, it’s a great exercise to reflect on these qualities and think about ways that you can incorporate them into your repertoire.

10. What problem are we solving?

Have you ever been in a meeting and suddenly realized that not everyone was having the same conversation? Not because people were talking over each other, but because they had different ideas about the purpose of the discussion. Sometimes it helps to put the topic on the whiteboard when you’re having a meeting. This makes certain everyone knows why they’re there.

11. What’s stopping me from doing the things that I should be doing?

It’s easy to shrug your shoulders and say, “I don’t know what to do,” but that’s just an excuse. Most of the time, we know exactly what we should be doing; we just aren’t willing to move the obstacles out of the way.

12. Will you be my mentor?

It’s an intimidating question to ask, but few people will turn you down. Everyone likes being looked up to, and it feels good to share our knowledge with others.

13. What’s the most important lesson I’ve learned so far in life? Am I living that lesson?

Sometimes life lulls us back into complacency and we’re forced to learn a powerful lesson twice. The trouble with this is that it’s just as much of a rude awakening the second time around.

Bringing It All Together

Asking the hard questions can be extremely uncomfortable. But we don’t learn and grow by sticking with what’s comfortable.

What other questions should people be asking? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Why Does My Hip Click?

Snapping Hip
Snapping hip is an audible clicking or snapping sensation caused by hip movement that can be painful. There are a variety of reasons patients present with a clicking or snapping sensation in the hip. A click in the hip can be the result of the following: a labral tear, iliotibial band syndrome, psoas bursitis, psoas tendon snap, and arthritis of the hip. It is essential for physicians to understand each cause to provide an effective course of treatment.

Labral Tear
A labral tear is a common cause for clicking sensations in the hip joint. The labrum refers to the ring of cartilage surrounding the socket of ball-and-socket joints. The labrum of the hip is essential in providing stability to the joint. This same ring of cartilage can be found in the shoulder.

Labral tears can be the result of degenerative or traumatic processes. Degenerative labral tears can occur from repetitive motions or osteoarthritis. Traumatic labral tears can occur from injury or dislocation of the joint. Femoroacetabular impingement is a common cause of a labral tear. Impingement occurs when the proximal femur abuts the acetabulum with movement of the hip. This occurs especially in hip flexion. A patient with a labral tear will usually present with complaints of a clicking or a locking sensation in the joint. In addition, a patient will present with pain in the hip or groin, stiffness and decreased range of motion.

Diagnoses
To diagnose a labral tear, physicians will utilize a combination of physical examinations, imaging and diagnostic injections. MRI arthrograms are typically utilized to diagnose a labral tear, while injections are then used to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment for a labral tear can range from conservative modalities to surgical intervention. Conservative treatments include anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy and injection. If conservative treatment fails, arthroscopic surgery may be needed to debride or repair the tear and the impingement can be addressed at the same time.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome.
Iliotibial band syndrome is another common cause of snapping hip. The thickened iliotibial band snaps over the bony greater trochanter of the femur. The patient may develop trochanteric bursitis, adhesions, gluteus maximus inflammation or edema.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis of iliotibial band syndrome can be done by direct palpation of the greater trochanter. This can be accomplished by placing a patient on their side, while putting the hip into extension and rotation until a “pop” is heard or felt. The patient can reproduce the snapping and sometimes this moment is physically seen.

Ober’s Test
The Ober’s test is the best clinical examination for assessing the tightness of the iliotibial band. To perform the Ober’s test the patient will lay on their side with the unaffected leg on the bottom. The examiner will slowly abduct the leg with the knee in flexion and the hip in extension. When the iliotibial band is tight, the test is positive. In a positive test the patient will be unable to adduct the leg and the knees will not come together.

Iliopsoas Tendon Snap
Iliopsoas tendon snap is the result of movement over the iliopectineal eminence. The iliopsoas tendon will snap over the pelvic brim. It is caused by inflammation of the bursa that lies between the front of the hip joint and the iliopsoas muscle or tendon. Diagnosis is usually difficult, the ultrasound or MRI may be normal or it may reveal fluid anterior to the hip joint (bursitis). An iliopsoas injection can be diagnostic. Abduction and external rotation and hearing the snap or the click of the hip will support this diagnosis.

2016-08-26-1472230606-4697293-hip2.PNG

Hip Arthritis
A click in the hip can also result from arthritis in the hip joint. Arthritis leads to the loss of cartilage between the head of the femur and the acetabulum. Without adequate cartilage, there is bone-on-bone interaction that causes pain, tenderness and inflammation of the hip joint. Patients will present with stiffness (limited movement), clicking in the hip joint, pain worsening with activity, and tenderness in the groin and hip. Physicians will utilize a combination of physical examinations and X-rays to identify loss of cartilage. Treatment for hip arthritis can be conservative or surgical. With severe arthritis a hip replacement will be needed to remove and replace the arthritic joint.

A Pirate Flag for Monterey

A Pirate Flag for Monterey

In 1819, Hypolite Bouchard, a corsair with a license from the newly independent country of Argentina to harass Spain’s possessions in the New World, decided to make a raid on the California colony. At this time, Monterey – having successfully survived drought, famine, and the constant demands of Spain for taxes far beyond her due – was probably the richest of the Alta California settlements. Knowing this, Bouchard and his men decided to strike a decisive blow for Argentina by sacking and burning Monterey. Loot in the form of gold, jewels, and plentiful food stores would mean not only riches for himself and his crew, but would replenish Argentina’s none too lavish coffers. Young Miguel San Lucas Obanion y Boronda, Mike to his family and friends, is returning from the Orient with his uncle, Captain Roger Obanion of the merchant ship “Boston Belle”. They learn of Bouchard’s plans on a stop in Hawaii and rush back to California to warn of the pirates’ intent. Things go badly for the “Boston Belle”, though, and Mike becomes a prisoner of the pirates. Somehow, they must get free and lead a resistance against the invaders. This book is the true but almost unknown story of Bouchard’s raid on Monterey. Hypolite Bouchard was a real person, as are many of the characters in the story. Others are people who might have been. They are fictitious, though many of the names used were actually present in California at the time. But it doesn’t matter. Whether real or fictitious, people like these did exist then, in a land that was almost a heaven for a few years, until trouble fell so heavily on it.

Ghassan’s Prediction and the Emerging New Palestinian Reality

During the past year, I’ve had the pleasure of receiving visits from Ayman Odeh, Ahmad Tibi, and most recently Basel Ghattas–as they passed through Washington. All are Palestinian citizens of Israel. And all are Members of the Israeli Knesset, part of the Joint Arab List that won a record 13 seats in the last Israeli election. It was a delight to sit with them and learn from them not only about the difficulties they face, but the progress they have made.

I have written about how I first became attached to the Arab community in Israel. It was the insightful Palestinian novelist, Ghassan Kanafani who caused me to divert my doctoral dissertation research from the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon to the Palestinian Arabs who remained in their homes after Israel was created in 1948. He gave me two reasons. While much had already been written about the refugees, there was an absence of good literature about the Palestinians “inside” and, he said, they are the most promising component group of the Palestinian people since they have been forged like steel in the hearth of Israel. Facing enormous difficulties, they have developed a uniquely progressive identity and, he believed, the day would come when they would be in a position to provide real visionary leadership for the entire Palestinian people.

My meetings with Odeh, Tibi, and Ghattas have given me the sense that Ghassan may have been right. These are remarkable individuals, part of a larger movement that has faced down the increasingly repressive, ultra-nationalist Israeli government while defending their rights and securing their political role.

For the first three decades, the Arabs in Israel couldn’t form political parties or join unions (these were reserved for Zionists or Jews). They lived under a draconian and discriminatory legal system. They lost their lands to widespread confiscation. The Israeli educational system forced them to study Hebrew and Jewish history instead of their own language and history. And those who resisted, were imprisoned or forcibly expelled from the country.

Like other civil rights movements, these Palestinian citizens of Israel used every available opening to win their rights, facing down arrests, expulsions, and lethal violence. While tremendous problems remain, Palestinian citizens in Israel now form political parties, join unions, and teach their language and history. They still face systemic racism in housing, employment, education, allocation of the state’s budget, and many other areas–and yet they have built and sustained a fighting force that continues to press their demands for justice and equality.

In creating their Joint List, the Palestinian citizens of Israel have forged a remarkable national unity bringing together diverse political currents: nationalists, traditionalists, and progressives–Muslims and Christians, alike. Netanyahu’s far-right governing coalition has stepped up its assault on the Arab community in an effort to divide them and break their resolve. Israel has created a fake new identity for Christians–in an effort to divide the Arabs on the basis of religion. They have charged some Arab Knesset Members with “incitement” for advocating on behalf of their Palestinian brethren living under the suffocating economic embargo imposed on Gaza. Israel has passed laws prohibiting Arabs and progressive Jews from supporting the non-violent boycott movement protesting Israel’s settlement policy and making it more difficult for them to receive grants from the EU to promote democracy and human rights. None of these repressive measures have broken their resolve or unity.

In addition to my earlier studies, I have, in recent years, polled the Palestinian Arab citizens in Israel, as well as the Palestinians living under occupation and those in exile. Of all of the component parts of the Palestinian people, the Arabs in Israel are the most forward looking and the most committed to achieving justice for the entire Palestinian people. And as I have watched Odeh, Tibi, and Ghattas in action, I have been impressed by their political savvy. Unlike the divided and visionless leadership of the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, the members of the Joint list have vision, a sound political sense of tactics and strategy, and a demonstrated ability to connect with the people they serve. While it is correct to acknowledge that Israel has done everything it could to weaken, punish, discredit, divide, and tie-in-knots the Palestinian leadership under occupation, the Israelis have been no less harsh in the treatment meted out to their own Palestinian citizenry. In this context, it is significant to note that while the efforts of several Arab states have failed, it is fallen on the shoulders of the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel (the collective leadership of the Arab community in Israel) to launch an initiative to bring about reconciliation between the Palestinian factions of Fateh and Hamas.

I have just finished reading a compelling Haaretz article “Stop with the Nonsense that Palestinians Are a Minority In Israel”. The writer Gideon Levy argues that since Israel has refused to separate from the occupied territories and continues to entrench its settler colonies deeper into the heart of the West Bank and the Arab areas of what they call “Greater Jerusalem”, the “era of the two state solution [is drawing] to a close” and has been replaced by a de facto “bi-national state” in which the numbers of Jews and Arabs are roughly equal. In this new reality, Arabs are not a minority, they are half of the population.

If this is to remain the case, and I see no evidence that the Netanyahu government will change direction or that any outside power will compel them to do so, then the Palestinian struggle will inevitably be transformed from one demanding independence into a movement demanding equal rights. This will merely be an extension of the fight that the “inside” Palestinians have been waging for seven decades. If this is to be the case, we may well see the day when the Palestinian citizens of Israel will emerge, as Kanafani predicted, as the new leadership of a unified Palestinian community fighting for justice and equality.

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. Please include name (if organization please include organization and contact name),mailing address, designate Spanish or English, amount of cards requested, and telephone number.

American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

Thought-Provoking Questions

Often, when I am booked for lectures or radio and television interviews, I am provided questions in advance to help me prepare. Some of the questions are provocative, the kind that make me stop and think. So much so, I am sharing a few here with my replies.

1. What are three principles you live by?
a) “Identify the fear and then go there.” Usually I’m afraid because it is something I have never done before, and so I figure I will at least learn something new. I always ask myself: What is the worst-case scenario? If it’s one I can deal with, I go for it.
b) “Not everything worth doing is worth doing well.” Being stuck striving for perfection will not allow you to move on. For me, this pertains to writing. It is never finished and can always be improved upon. But at some point, it must be abandoned. Of course, this does not apply to everything; be sure to use discernment.
c) “Maintain an open mind.” I try to not be judgmental or assume that I know best. I listen and attempt to understand other points of view, seeing them in the contexts of culture and personality. When presented with a new opportunity, I ask myself: Will I learn something?

2. Do you believe nature or nurture has more impact?
People are born with specific tendencies; some children are shy, some are outgoing. This is a natural component of our genes, but then life experiences also impact our brains. Successes can reinforce behavior while failures discourage future attempts. So it is both. First it is nature, then nurture. Both have an equal influence.

3. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
I wish I had not cared so much about what other people thought of me. As women, we try to please others more than necessary. Speak the truth as often as possible and be willing to be disliked, but respected.

4. What did you wish to be when you were a child?
My childhood dream was to be a poet. I won a poetry contest for a poem I wrote when I was eight. This early success inspired me to continue writing poems, which I still do today.

5. What role does luck play in success?
Obviously, luck plays a part–you have to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people. However, success is also “opportunity meeting preparation.” I am always scanning my environment to look for ways to make a contribution and a difference.

6. What are the barriers to female leadership?
“MEN!” There is still gender discrimination, both conscious and unconscious, even by well-meaning men. Our culture continues to be dominated by male values, and, in the majority of cases, even when shown the same resume with a male or female name, men are chosen over women for both promotions and as new hires.

7. What was your biggest challenge?
a) Acceptance. As the only woman on the faculty of a business school, the first woman in a Rotary Club, the only female consultant in all-male organizations, I faced issues of acceptance. I did not try to blend in, as I knew this was not possible, so I stood out by wearing red suits, sitting on the arms of chairs to make me look taller (I am barely 5 feet tall).
b) A close second was being ignored–not only feeling invisible, but, also, not heard, and (when earned) not rewarded.

8. What changes in the workplace would you like to see?
I would like to see flexible working hours as a norm at work. This would permit time off not only for child-related needs, but, also, for the increasing needs of aging parents. Men must be provided with the same opportunity to take an equal share of these responsibilities without negative consequences in the workplace. What do you attribute your success to?
The willingness to ask the first question, using an assertive voice, looking others in the eye while conversing, giving credit when credit is due, looking and sounding confident (even when I do not feel that way), being well-prepared by knowing the agenda and relevant facts, and lastly, believing in myself.

9. What are the three rules you live by?
a) First of all, have fun. b) Do no harm. c) Be as helpful to as many people as possible.
I am urging you, my readers, to do the same. Think of each question as it relates to you, your values, philosophies, experiences, your life overall. Take time to answer these questions honestly and you might gain new insights–perhaps discover some unconscious motivations.

Trump’s Doctor Has An Amazing Explanation For That Bizarre Medical Report

Donald Trump’s personal physician told NBC News that he wrote a now-infamous medical report about the candidate in just five minutes.

Dr. Harold Bornstein, a gastroenterologist who has been Trump’s doctor for more than three decades, released a brief note last December declaring the reality TV star would be “the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency.” The four-paragraph letter, which billed Trump’s health as “astonishingly excellent,” was far less detailed than medical reports traditionally released by presidential candidates.

In an interview with NBC airing Friday, Bornstein said he spent “five minutes” on the letter while a car sent by Trump waited for him outside his office in Manhattan.

“I get rushed and I get anxious when I get rushed, so I try to get four or five lines done as fast as possible,” Bornstein explained. “In a rush, I think some of those words didn’t come out exactly the way they were meant.”

The doctor stood by his assessment of the reality TV star’s wellness.

“His health is excellent, particularly his mental health,” he said.

He also defended the claim that Trump would be the healthiest president in history.

“I like that sentence to be quite honest with you, and all the rest of them are either sick or dead,” he said.

Watch the interview above.

Bornstein and his bizarre note have come under scrutiny again as Trump and his campaign surrogates have floated conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton’s health. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow pressed Trump campaign manager Kellyane Conway on the issue during an interview Thursday.

“If he was elected, Donald Trump would be the oldest person to ever be sworn in as president,” Maddow said. “Whether or not he’s going to try to make Hillary Clinton’s health the issue, doesn’t he owe it to the American people to release an actual medical report, a more credible, more complete statement?”

Conway said “perhaps” he should release more information.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Clinton Foundation Defenders Sound A Lot Like Citizens United Apologists

So, that happened: This week, The Associated Press rocked the Clinton campaign’s world after releasing a report detailing new concerns about the Clinton Foundation. In that story, the AP alleges that more than half the people who represent private interests who donated to the Clinton family charity received access and other favors from the State Department during Hillary Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state. Clinton’s defenders have responded to the story by pointing to the fact that the AP didn’t provide any evidence of a quid pro quo ― a straight line of evidence connecting money offered to a deed performed.

But defining political corruption strictly along these lines has only been a recent legal innovation ― one that flies in the face of a century of case law that held that even the appearance of corruption was a de facto threat to good governance. That’s all changed because of the way the Supreme Court ruled in cases like 2010’s Citizens United v. FEC. On this week’s edition of the “So, That Happened” podcast, we mark the occasion where you can no longer differentiate between these two sets of apologists.

Elsewhere on the podcast: Over in the Trump campaign, they’re working hard at the pivot they’ve promised to make for months, and the most interesting thing that’s emerged is that on the reality TV host’s signature issue ― his draconian approach to immigration ― Donald Trump no longer seems to know what he either believes or says. Did Trump mean it when he said his Republican rivals were soft on immigration? And if so, why does he suddenly seem to prefer the immigration policies of low-energy Jeb Bush?

Meanwhile, a pharmaceutical company called Mylan is under fire this week after raising the prices of their epi-pens ― a device used by the severely allergic to prevent a fatal allergy attack ― by 400%. Consumers are angry, as are members of Congress, who are demanding that Mylan reverse course. If only that same Congress hadn’t continually made policy choices that allowed for these monopolistic practices in the first place.

Finally, for some third-party perspective on our presidential race, we welcome back our favorite Bernie Sanders supporter, the always effervescent Tim Black of “The Tim Black Show.” We’ll ask him if Clinton’s managed to close the deal with him, and whether or not folks like him are having an impact on Democratic Party policies at all.

“So, That Happened” is hosted by Jason Linkins, Zach Carter and Arthur Delaney. Joining them this week: Tim Black of “The Tim Black Show,” as well as Huffington Post reporter Elise Foley.

This podcast was produced, edited and engineered by Christine Conetta.

Why We Need To Make Space For Quiet Teachers

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

As the ice-cold applesauce poured over my head, I kept telling myself that it was for the kids. My humiliation was their gain. I would be the cool, hip teacher who was willing to embarrass himself instead of the stodgy taskmaster with high standards.

But after the completion of the all-school rally, in which several teachers and I agreed to be slimed with applesauce by students who met specific academic goals, I just felt sticky, gross, and humiliated. This is how I was going to inspire and encourage the next generation?

I know now that attempt to be cool and hip was utterly useless. My teaching and interactions with students were none the better for participating in such sophomoric stunts. In fact, for the students in my class, it was more startling than supportive, particularly for the quiet, thoughtful ones who had bonded with me because they had finally found a teacher to whom they could relate. I was a safe space—a teacher who wouldn’t constantly nag them to “be more social” or pair them up with the struggling students to push them through their work when the quiet ones had finished their own. They were happy to do well, participate when needed, and carry on with being good students; they felt comfort in having found a quiet role model in me. My departure from my quiet self shocked them.

A larger push for collaboration

Sadly, such quiet students and teachers won’t be left alone much longer. There’s a growing movement in education to turn teachers into performers and students into non-stop collaborators. This is the effect of the Extrovert Ideal. Teachers are increasingly expected to be not just knowledgeable about content and good at the art and science of teaching but also outgoing and exciting on stage. It’s the Ron Clark method run amok: in meeting after meeting, I’d constantly hear the need to excite students with learning. Unfortunately, that meant entertaining them, which doesn’t always go hand in hand with appealing to their intellect.

Every couple of weeks a YouTube video goes viral of a teacher dancing with their class orperforming a hip hop routine, which is supposed to show how well the students learned the content and bonded with their teacher. The problem is that sometimes learning isn’t that exciting. You may not have enjoyed grammar rules or algebraic problem solving, but for such disciplines, persistent focus is good for the mind. Deliberate practice and the road to mastery can be thrilling, but not for the entertainment value.

Oftentimes, the best teachers are exactly the opposite of those dancers above. Think of the patient but firm and knowledgeable sage who may have guided you to a breakthrough when you were interpreting the events of history, struggling to understand a challenging piece of literature, or trying to interpret data in the lab. And even if you’re an extrovert, you may have come to value that time alone to think through a problem. As has been noted, the best and most innovative thinking often comes to us when we are alone.

A tough road for quiet students

The outlook isn’t bleak just for quiet teachers. Introverted students are pushed more and more towards group work and collaboration throughout the school day. Movements like the flipped classroom and blended learning encourage students to constantly find a solution together. Group writing, problem solving, and presentations are the future. Yes, these play a part in the world of work. However, such demands will leave our quiet students exhausted by the end of the day. And quiet teachers will be forced to facilitate a nonstop parade where no one will learn the ability to take time to reflect.

This is unfortunate because introverts bring a lot of good to the teaching profession: we value deep and meaningful conversations and content. Tackling a complex math problem after patiently and silently assessing the problem yourself causes the learning to stick far more than chatting with a partner about what methods to employ. And everyone has been in that group where a couple of people struggle through the work while trying to wrangle the others to stay on task. Introvert teachers cherish taking and granting quiet time to think—something that students are being robbed of in the push for working with groups and partners. Worst of all, quiet students face little autonomy as more lessons are designed to elevate the Extrovert Experience. Parents of quiet children may have to watch out for social burnout or even consider a different placement if things become too overwhelming.

What are quiet teachers to do?

Whether teacher or student, an introvert finds it tough enough to be in today’s classroom. Even when you value your students, want the best for them, and have structured your classroom to include both quiet and group activities, there’s a small relief at sending them off at the end of the day. But if everything moves to a model that requires a teacher to be on stage and pushing conversation all the time, the job may be untenable for those with a quiet temperament.

Quiet teachers will have to find ways to carve out time for themselves when they can even if it means declining lunch invites or using that rare prep time to reflect on their practices. If it comes down to it, have a ready-made list of alternative obligations in your mind to ensure you get the quiet time you need: you may need to catch up on grading, plan for a parent conference, or finish up an independent study packet for a student about to go on vacation. In a profession where being social is a significant part of the day, you have to allow yourself moments to catch your breath. There’s also value in just being upfront with those with whom you work: people can be surprisingly understanding if you tell them that you just need a little time alone to recharge.

Yet, there’s also value in seeking out fellow introverted teachers as a way to build camaraderie and generate new ideas. Additionally, a tiny drop of rebellion is sometimes a good thing: bucking the extrovert trend by building in reflective time for students will not only benefit the introverts in class but provide some needed thinking time for everyone.

Extroverts certainly deserve the ability to interact with one another and engage in collaborative efforts during the school day. It’s not that this shouldn’t be a component of education. It’s just the scale is tipping profoundly in one direction. Forcing introverted kids and teachers to live as extroverts throughout the day would be the equivalent of asking all the extroverts to take a vow of silence. Finding the right balance and meeting everyone’s needs is the right approach, which is what education is supposed to be about.

The Debut of Bernie’s “Our Revolution”: Great Potential. But.

While Bernie Sanders was doing a brilliant job of ripping into the Trans-Pacific Partnership during the livestreamed launch of the Our Revolution organization on Wednesday night, CNN was airing a phone interview with Hillary Clinton and MSNBC was interviewing Donald Trump’s campaign manager.

That sums up the contrast between the enduring value of the Bernie campaign and the corporate media’s fixation on the political establishment. Fortunately, Our Revolution won’t depend on mainline media. That said, the group’s debut foreshadowed not only great potential but also real pitfalls.

Even the best election campaigns aren’t really “movements.” Ideally, campaigns strengthen movements and vice versa. As Bernie has often pointed out, essential changes don’t come from Congress simply because of who has been elected; those changes depend on strong grassroots pressure for the long haul.

It’s all to the good that Our Revolution is encouraging progressives around the country to plan far ahead for effective electoral races, whether for school board, city council, state legislature or Congress. Too many progressives have treated election campaigns as impulse items, like candy bars in a checkout line.

Opportunities await for campaigns that might be well-funded much as Bernie’s presidential race was funded, from many small online donations. But except for presidential races, the politics of elections are overwhelmingly local — and therein lies a hazard for Our Revolution.

A unified set of positions nationwide can be helpful; likewise publicity and fundraising for candidates across state borders. But sometimes hidden in plain sight is a basic fact: National support does not win local elections. Local grassroots support does.

Backing from Our Revolution will be close to worthless unless people are deeply engaged with long-term activism in local communities — building relationships, actively supporting a wide range of sustained progressive efforts, developing the basis for an election campaign that (win or lose on Election Day) will strengthen movements.

Sooner or later, some kind of culture clash is likely to emerge when social-change activists get involved in a serious election campaign. Running for office involves priorities that diverge from some tendencies of movement activism (as I learned when running for Congress four years ago). The urgencies and practicalities of election campaigns aren’t always compatible with how grassroots progressive groups tend to function.

As a 501c4 organization, Our Revolution won’t be running campaigns. Instead, it’ll raise funds and provide support for campaigns while being legally prohibited from “coordinating” with them. And — most imminently with the urgent need to stop the TPP in Congress during the lame-duck session — Our Revolution could make a big difference in pressuring lawmakers on key issues.

Overall, the livestreaming debut of Our Revolution continued a terrific legacy from the Bernie campaign of educating and agitating with vital progressive positions on such crucial matters as economic justice, institutional racism, climate change, Wall Street, corporate trade deals and health care.

But throughout Our Revolution’s livestream, war went unmentioned. So did Pentagon spending. So did corporate profiteering from the massive U.S. military budget.

In that sense, the evening was a step backward for Bernie. After virtually ignoring foreign policy and military-related issues during his campaign’s early months last summer, he gradually criticized Hillary Clinton’s record of supporting regime change. In early spring, during the New York primary campaign, he laudably called for evenhanded policies toward Israel and Palestinians. Although he never delivered more than occasional and brief glancing blows at the military-industrial complex during the campaign, Bernie did offer some valuable critiques of foreign policy.

But from the debut of Our Revolution, including Bernie’s 49-minute speech, you wouldn’t have a clue that the United States is completing its fifteenth year of continuous warfare, with no end in sight.

Now, sadly, there may be a need to reactivate the petition headlined “Bernie Sanders, Speak Up: Militarism and Corporate Power Are Fueling Each Other,” which 25,000 people signed on a RootsAction webpage 12 months ago:

Senator Sanders, we are enthusiastic about your presidential campaign’s strong challenge to corporate power and oligarchy. We urge you to speak out about how they are intertwined with militarism and ongoing war. Martin Luther King Jr. denounced what he called “the madness of militarism,” and you should do the same. As you said in your speech to the SCLC, “Now is not the time for thinking small.” Unwillingness to challenge the madness of militarism is thinking small.

As the petition page noted, Dr. King “explicitly and emphatically linked the issues of economic injustice at home with war abroad.” In a society desperately needing “adequate funds for programs of economic equity and social justice,” the challenge remains clear: “Overcoming militarism is just as vital as overcoming oligarchy. We won’t be able to do one without the other.”

If Bernie and Our Revolution continue to evade the present-day realities of “the madness of militarism,” their political agenda will be significantly more limited than what our revolution requires for a truly progressive future.

Two Keys Why You Don’t Receive & How to Shift It!

Have you ever wondered why you struggle receiving the things you want? I see this a lot in my coaching practice and with my students. In fact, I would say that receiving is one of the key issues most people face. I would like to share with you some thoughts that might help you break out of this painful cycle.

Here are the two core reasons I’ve seen over and over again that shut people down to receiving:

1. We are brought up to believe that receiving is wrong. For some, this belief stems in religion, and for others it begins in the home.

There is a tendency in religion to push the belief that being of service means you must deny yourself. In other words, don’t receive. But when you live by this belief, you shut down to taking the time to go within and connect to God. This is where you get the guidance you need to live life in the flow with grace and ease.

Even if your family wasn’t religious, you might have been brought up in a home in which your mom and dad gave themselves up to take care of your needs. They set the example that it wasn’t okay to receive. This is why it’s so important for parents to love themselves. They don’t realize that they are perpetuating a cycle of pain for their kids to grow up and do the same.

2. Feeling bad about one’s self is the second reason most people don’t receive. If you have beliefs, whether conscious or hidden, that tell you something is wrong with you or that you have to act a certain way to receive, you’ll stay shut down to having miracles show up. This is why it’s so important to do the inner work of cleaning up subconscious beliefs. As you chip away at each of them and raise your Worthiness Quotient to inner abundance, you attract outer abundance and miracles.

I share a story of Cassie in my book, The Enlightened Mom, and her awakening to the importance of receiving. Cassie had attended my weekly live Enlightened Mom class, focusing on helping the ladies release subconscious beliefs so they could finally love themselves unconditionally and open up to receive. From the very first session, most of the moms were having breakthroughs and seeing miracles show up in their daily lives. But Cassie was different. She was mired in the negativity of her mind and really struggled with receiving.

For the last session of our class, we went to a local bookstore and sat on the patio. I invited the ladies to take a moment and go within to get grounded and connected to God before going into the store. Their mission was to allow God to guide them and to open up to receive a message.

Cassie was the first one back to the patio! With tear-filled eyes and joy that was palpable, she shared the incredible messages she received, one after the other from the pages of a book she had been guided to pick up. Cassie exclaimed, “I get it now! I used to ask God for guidance and would get so angry because I never got answers. Now I realize the messages were always there. All I had to do was give myself permission to open up and receive them!”

Cassie had been mired in false beliefs about receiving. She gradually chipped away at some of those beliefs during our class. But it wasn’t until that day at the bookstore that she finally realized a huge truth:

You are the one who determines whether you receive.

2016-08-24-1472065296-5598401-15278638_s.jpg

Are you like Cassie was? Are you shut down to receiving the love, guidance and support you seek to make life a joyful flow?

If your answer is yes, it is time to look within. Do you have religious programming that says to be of service you must not receive? Or did you grow up in a family in which your parents put themselves on the backburner, giving you an example that this is love?

To be able to give freely, you must learn to receive. You can’t truly be of service if you’re coming from an empty cup.

Here are three simple steps to open up to receive:

1. Give yourself permission to receive. You are the boss of your life. If you’re not receiving a life of grace and ease, it’s because you’re still making others the authority of your life.

2. Take time daily to connect. Spend time in meditation, prayer, journaling or whatever works for you, but by all means, connect. This is a powerful way to set your inner compass to receiving.

3. Be you! Pay attention to when you shut down your voice, your feelings and your needs. Then give yourself permission to share these things. If you struggle with this, go within and clean up the beliefs that stop you down. By loving yourself unconditionally, you send out an energetic message to the universe that says, “I deserve to receive simply for being me!”

Receiving is the loving thing to do. As you transition into this new belief, you will feel loved, guided and supported. You will shift from lack to abundance. And your life will flow magically with grace and ease.

Receiving is an act of service.

As you give yourself permission to receive, your cup will be so full that you’ll want everyone else to feel the way you do. You’ll serve others by lifting them up. You’ll want to give like never before. Your life will be your greatest act of service.

4 Things People Who Are Grieving Want You To Know

Whether it’s triggered by a tragic event or the loss of a loved one, grief is a part of the human experience that we will all have to endure.

But however universal that haunting sadness is, grieving is an isolating, complicated process that can be very difficult to understand. That’s why it can be helpful to be armed with as much information as possible to help you or someone you love carry on through trying times.

Below are a few things people experiencing this complex emotion would want you to know:

1. Grief is not one emotion, but a collection of emotions.

Feelings of yearning and sorrow define grief, but most grieving people will also experience anxiety, guilt, anger or shame, according to Katherine Shear, program director for Columbia University’s Center for Complicated Grief. Grief can also include positive emotions ― someone may feel relief, for example, after losing a loved one who was ill or burdensome ― which makes the grieving process all the more complex.

“Grief is not a single emotion, but rather contains a compendium of emotions, both negative and positive,” Shear said during a 2014 panel on grief and depression. And this spectrum of feelings can help an individual move forward.

“Overall,” Shear continued, “many complex and varying emotional, cognitive and behavioral changes are entailed in making the adaptation needed to come to terms with the loss and to re-envision the future after bereavement.”

2. People grieve in different ways ― and that’s OK.

Grieving is a personal journey. While one person may choose to be surrounded by friends or family during a time of sadness or loss, another individual may prefer solitude. The only correct way to grieve is the one that best fits the individual’s unique needs.

“Not understanding the individuality of grief could complicate and delay whatever grief we might experience from our own loss,” grief counselor Jinny Tesik wrote for the nonprofit Suicide Awareness Voices of Education. “It could also influence us, should we attempt to judge the grieving of others.”

However, if you or someone you know begins abusing alcohol or drugs as a way to suppress or control the painful feelings of grief, it may be time to step in. If an individual needs help with substance abuse or mental health issues, call 800-662-HELP (4357) for the SAMHSA National Helpline.

3. When grief is prolonged and significantly more painful, it is a condition known as “complicated grief.”

Most grief gradually dissipates without the need for therapy or professional counseling. Complicated grief, however, involves severe grieving that is especially long, debilitating and gets worse over time, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Symptoms of this deep level of grief go beyond the typical anxiety and mourning experienced with normal grief, and include intense sorrow at the thought of a lost loved one, an obsession with the tragic event, detachment, feelings of bitterness, lack of trust in others and an inability to enjoy life. An estimated 15 percent of people who lose a loved one will experience complicated grief, according to Yale University psychologist Holly Prigerson.

If you or someone you care about is experiencing this type of grief, Mayo Clinic recommends seeking professional help or counseling for relief, especially if the grieving person is at risk for self-harm.

4. Grief isn’t always something to conquer. It can be something you learn to live with.

After a period of grieving ends, the emotions don’t simply disappear forever. Sometimes, an event or an image can trigger a memory of a loved one, causing feelings of sadness, longing and loss.

“As time passes, the intensity of feelings about the loss will lessen… But you’re not going to get over it because that’s impossible: You cannot erase emotional memory,” Mary C. Lamia, a clinical psychologist, wrote in 2011 blog for Psychology Today.

Some researchers even argue that one cannot return to a prior emotional state after a significant loss.

“Besides, it’s not about achieving closure,” Lamia wrote on Psychology Today. “Instead you have to figure out what you are going to do when your emotional memories are later triggered.”

Though it’s impossible to predict how loss will affect any one person, working through that loss is something we will all experience. Be respectful of your own grieving process, as well as that of others. And, above all, if you feel like you or someone you know needs help, don’t be afraid to ask for it.

No Time For Trump : Killing Off The Death Penalty

The death penalty exoneration reported in the New York Times contained the customary horrors.

In 1983, police in rural North Carolina arrested two mentally -disabled African-American teenage half-brothers for the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl. After hours of interrogation without a lawyer, the oldest brother cracked under threats of execution, signing a confession written by police. Then, bewildered, he asked his interrogators: “Can I go home now?”

He never did. Confronted with the coerced confession after hours of the same unrelenting pressure, the retarded 15-year-old brother signed a confession of his own.

At trial, both recanted their confessions, the only evidence against them. But a Bible – thumping prosecutor later known as America’s “deadliest DA” sought the death penalty. The jury sent them to death row.

In 1994, the US Supreme Court declined to review the case. In dissent, Justice Harry Blackmun noted that the older brother had the mental age of a nine-year-old. “This factor alone,” he wrote,” persuades me that the death penalty in this case is unconstitutional.”

After 30 years, pro bono lawyers pressed for DNA testing of a cigarette butt found near the victim’s body. The testing matched the DNA on the cigarette to a man with a history of sexual assaults who lived a block from where the body was found. A man who – only weeks after the murder – had confessed to the rape and murder of an 18-year-old girl in the same town. Remarkably, the local police had never questioned him about the strikingly similar crime for which the brothers were sentenced to death.

In 2014, the brothers were released – 31 years too late.

This case typifies the reason that the 2016 platform of the Democratic Party states succinctly: “We will abolish the death penalty, which has proven to be a cruel and unusual punishment. It has no place in the United States of America.” But If Donald Trump becomes president, we will have more such cases – many more.

Trump is a longtime death penalty enthusiast who has committed to expanding its reach. This despite all the evidence that its application is unconscionable – entrapping the innocent, and disproportionately ensnaring the poor and the miserable, while bypassing those whose guilt is often greater.

Start with the innocent. By March of this year, the number of official death row exonerations reached 156. The reasons are not hard to pinpoint.

First, race. In almost 80% of the cases where the defendant is executed, the victim was white. In contrast, the majority of death row inmates – that is, the 10% of defendants eligible for the death penalty who actually receive it – are black or Latino.

To this add the most dire personal hardship. The biographies of death row inmates are numbingly similar: fetal alcohol syndrome, organic brain damage, medical inattention, economic and educational deprivation, and repeated familial beatings, torture and sexual abuse which makes mere parental neglect enviable by comparison. In itself, the laser-like focus of our death penalty on those who suffer society’s most terrible conditions exposes its inescapable inequity.

Cement all this with terrible lawyers. Routinely, the disadvantaged get the defense that they can pay for.

A review of death row cases documents the inevitable results. Lawyers who are overworked, inexperienced, unprepared and underpaid. An absence of vital expert witnesses. Forensic or scientific evidence which is botched or phony. A failure to investigate facts essential to the defense.

But not all of the distortions of justice are inadvertent. Add police and prosecutors who, unchecked by a zealous defense, run roughshod at trial and, at times, withhold potentially exculpatory evidence. Or “eyewitnesses” who are vengeful or mistaken. Or crafty snitches who shift blame to the defendant in exchange for a lighter sentence. Or, in some cases, all of this.

There is no way to redeem these miscarriages. Far from being a magic bullet, DNA exonerations expose but the tip of the death penalty’s dark iceberg. Contrary to popular delusion, DNA evidence is available in less than 10% of murders – steel bullets, which account for the majority of killings, do not create human DNA. The only question is how often we have buried our mistakes.

This is, perhaps, the ultimate price of a regime so blatantly discriminatory: while it unerringly selects the underprivileged, it does not exclude the innocent. But the American system is specifically engineered to ensure that those are convicted stay convicted, guilty or not.

This is the dirty secret which few of us understand.

In 1996, responding to the widespread perception that death sentences were being unreasonably delayed by last – minute legal maneuvers, Congress passed the Anti – terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act – AEDPA . Its aim is to place “finality” of sentencing and execution above the risk of executing the wrong person.

If “effective” means putting the innocent to death, AEDPA is an indubitable success. Once convicted a defendant can present new evidence of innocence only through a habeas corpus petition – the very remedy AEDPA seeks to curb. And its effects on habeas corpus are draconian.

Suppose that a defense lawyer uncovers persuasive new evidence that the man about to die is, quite possibly, innocent. Under AEDPA, that is not nearly enough to prevent his execution. Instead, the new evidence must be so “clear and convincing” that no reasonable jury would now convict him of murder.

“Reasonable doubt” no longer applies. 50 – 50 does not pass the test. Even “more likely not” won’t do it. In short, AEDPA reverses the burden of proof.

And yet, unbelievably, even if the defendant musters “clear and convincing evidence of innocence”, the state can still execute him.

Why? Because AEDPA erects yet more barriers against the use of this new evidence.

First, the evidence is barred if his original lawyer could have discovered it had they been reasonably diligent. So if the lawyer who defended him was too incompetent or inexperienced or just plain lazy to uncover what he should have found, the prisoner is out of luck.

Second, even if the exculpatory evidence could not have been found before conviction, it is still barred if the reviewing court finds that the original trial was “constitutionally fair.” Chilling as it it may seem, a man who newly discovered evidence appears to vindicate can nonetheless be executed if the trial which convicted him – however wrongly – is deemed “fair.”

Under AEDPA, this is hardly a daunting standard. The most common claim of unfairness is that the defendant’s lawyer was so grossly inadequate that this denied his client a fair trial. And drunks and drug addicts and lawyers who fell asleep at crucial moments have been found good enough to get their client executed.

But stop and consider the resulting Catch-22. If the defendant had a lawyer bad enough to pass test two- that his trial was unfair – then he probably has failed test one: very often the new evidence could have been discovered by more diligent lawyer.

Yet even if a defendant clears every one of these hurdles, another barrier awaits. In order to get a hearing to consider the new evidence, he needs the approval of the federal court overseeing his case. If the court turns him down – no matter how arbitrary the reason – he is barred from appealing.

In other words, he’s dead. If his claim was presented before, no matter how badly – or incompletely – he’s dead. And even if the US Supreme Court hands down a new rule of law which would prevent his execution were he tried today, it does not matter unless the Court expressly applies the rule to habeas corpus petitions. Otherwise, he’s dead.

Truly, this is justice in a fun house mirror – Franz Kafka as executioner.

That should haunt us all. And the certainty that we have executed many hundreds of innocent people should cause us to recoil. As Justice William Brennan once wrote: “It is tempting to pretend that those on death row share a fate in no way connected to our own… Such an illusion is ultimately corrosive, for the reverberations of justice are not so easily confined… [ T]he way in which we choose who will die reveals the depth of moral commitment among the living.”

Instead, the way we choose who will die betrays a moral blindness, a preference for punishment as palliative which allows the ills of our society to permeate the gravest judgment we can make about a fellow human – that we are entitled to take his life. And with this, all too often, comes class bias – the idea that these people are not like us, and therefore should be of no concern.

A word of personal honesty, for the death penalty can never be a bloodless subject.

Many occupants of death row have committed murders too hideous to describe here. Were the victim a member of my family, I would be gripped by the desire for vengeance. But society does not owe me that. The loss of a loved one cannot be redeemed – not this way, not through this system. For the error and injustice embedded within is rooted in human flaws beyond our power to abolish.

But, state-by-state, it is within our power as citizens to abolish the death penalty. And it is within the power of the Supreme Court to bar it all together- yet another reason to care about which president appoints our justices, and which party has now committed to ridding us of capital punishment.

This last point is crucial. A Supreme Court ruling would bar the federal government from imposing capital punishment, a step Congress is unlikely to take. And the states most enthusiastic about the death penalty – Texas, Missouri, Georgia and Florida – have the least qualms about its inequity. In particular, Texas- which leads the country in death row exonerations- continues to briskly execute its prisoners.

In the near term, these and other states are no more likely to abolish the death penalty than are countries like China, North Korea, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. When it comes to capital punishment its advocates, typically conservative, forget that it is something they scorn in other contexts – a government program. So the question is whether the federal government or any state can constitutionally maintain a regime of death so discriminatory and prone to lethal error.

Here, again, the death of Antonin Scalia looms. On the Court, no one advocated the death penalty more fiercely; no one was more cavalier about the prospect – indeed, the certainty – of wrongful executions. To read his opinions on the subject is to wonder at the callousness, smugness and sheer self -satisfaction which so blithely permeates his prose. But his unwonted exuberance may have had an unwanted result – pushing his colleagues closer to abolition.

Before Scalia’s demise, a 5 to 4 Republican majority upheld Oklahoma’s lethal injection protocol. In dissent, Justice Breyer, joined by Justice Ginsburg, questioned the death penalty as a whole. “Today’s administration of the death penalty, “Breyer wrote, “involves three fundamental constitutional defects: serious unreliability, arbitrariness in application, and unconscionably long delays that undermine [it’s] penological purpose.”

Now Donald Trump has offered us a list of prospective nominees to fill the vacancy Scalia left. All are hard-line conservatives, all but certain to uphold this shameful aspect of our justice system. In this way, as in others, Trump has promised to perpetuate Scalia’s dubious legacy.

In crucial areas of the law, much may depend on who takes Antonin Scalia’s place. Including whether America, like Yemen or North Korea, continues to execute the innocent.

In murderous dictatorships, we find that unacceptable. And so we should at home.

What No One Told Me About Following My Passion

Like much of my generation in America, I don’t have to worry about where my next meal will come from. I don’t have to worry about how I’ll get to work. I don’t have to worry about a safe, dry place to sleep.

So I worry about something else, with which much less of the world has the luxury of preoccupation: purpose. Some spend their days searching for food; I spend my life hunting meaning–full, but unsatisfied.

Most millennials’ basic needs have been met–a prerequisite for fulfilling our greatest potential. If we don’t make our lives meaningful, we will have dishonored and squandered our opportunity. Perhaps this responsibility explains our fixation with purpose.

We know what we want. The question is: how do we find it?

Hoping that international travel and novel experiences would infuse my life with meaning, I moved to Canada when I graduated college. There I learned, as I conclude in my essay The Myth of Wanderlust, “you can’t drive to purpose.”

So I returned home and pursued my lifelong passion of writing. For the last two years, I’ve followed a self-authored, step-by-step plan to successfully discovering, integrating and making money from my passions. A marketing position, an editing role and six months of self-employment later, I realized you can’t write to purpose, either.

Passion, I’ve learned, does not equal purpose.

Why?

Here’s a synopsis of the 8000 words I initially spewed on this question:

Passion, the way many millennials have come to define it, is self-oriented. Passion is “a strong inclination toward a self-defining activity that one loves, values, and in which one invests a substantial amount of time and energy,” explains one study published in Self and Identity.

Purpose, on the other hand, is other-oriented. One Stanford study found that individuals with meaning mindsets “seek connections, give to others, and orient themselves to a larger purpose.”

Modern passion is pleasure-oriented. One influential study on passion defines it as “an autonomous internalization that leads individuals to choose to engage in the activity that they like.” In other words, passion’s answer to “Why are you doing this?” is “Because I like it.”

But meaningfulness, sums the Stanford study, sometimes involves “feeling bad”.

Passion is short-term. Though we tend to assume it’s lifelong, passion changes more than we anticipate because we change more than we anticipate. As Terri Trespicio observes in her TEDx Talk, “Passion is not a plan. Passion is a feeling, and feelings change.”

Purpose is hardy. Gritty individuals, explains one study, prioritize long-term goals. This long-term perspective, another study notes, helps give “more weight to meaning than pleasure” and solidifies self-control.

I don’t regret following my passion. In fact, I still endorse my strategy. Passions help us understand who we are and what we want. They bring vitality and joy to our days. But following your passion is a deceptively slow, uncertain way to purpose.

If I could tell myself anything three years ago when I graduated college, it would probably be this:

“Follow your passion, sure. But don’t expect it to produce your purpose.”

I help 1000+ ambitious millennials find their professional purpose with a research-packed weekly newsletter. Want in? Subscribe.

A Unique Approach To Discomfort

“Destiny is not for comfort seekers. Destiny is for the daring and determined who are willing to endure some discomfort, delay gratification, and go where destiny leads.” ~ T.D. Jakes

“We ask God for signs, wonders and miracles, but refuse to go into circumstances where we need them.” — Christine Caine

One may believe that a happy life eschews pain and discomfort by all costs. But, in truth, life opens up to us and expands when we’re squeezed and pushed through discomfort. Our emotional constriction, which creates our discomfort, begins to soften and expand when we lean into our discomfort. Moreover, our dreams are actualized through moments of confusion, doubt, fear, and uncertainty. So, when we’re pushed into our discomfort zone, we’re better able to witness and cultivate new skills that will propel us to new heights in our spiritual, emotional, and physical evolution.

How many of us can say that we have grown and transformed the most when we are “seemingly” sailing through life? Not many of us. When things appear superficially “perfect” and aligned in our lives, what could possibly ignite us toward growth and realizing God’s deeper purpose for our lives?

However, what indubitably pushes us toward greater fulfillment and purpose in our lives is when we’re tightly squeezed and pushed through discomfort. The physical manifestation of the contrast between what we deeply desire on a soulful level to what is actually showing up in our lives, creates the emotional and spiritual dissonance for us to push through and create transformation.

Transformation is accelerated in our lives through pain and discomfort. Such that, God will use different people, events, and circumstances to show up in our lives that cause us aggravation and distress, as a catalyst for growth and inspiration. Personally, I created a life that I dreamed of, living on a paradise island as a Life & Spiritual Coach & Teacher, not by coasting through life and feeling on top of the world. No. My life was radically changed when I hit my lowest point. When my pain and suffering had become enough.

Through pain and suffering, my heart opened up to greater transparency for God’s light to shine through and heal, motivate, and push me at deeper levels. Surely, the pressure was strong and tightening, but the more pressure I experienced, the harder I fought. Had I experienced continued success selling real estate in New York City, perhaps with money flowing in easily and effortlessly, and joy living in a city that stole my heart 19 years ago, I would not be living the life of my dreams right now. I’d still be living a life that was content and good, but truthfully, mediocre in the eyes of God. But, God doesn’t want GOOD ENOUGH for our lives, he wants GREAT!

So where is discomfort showing up in your life? Is it in a relationship? A job? Your living circumstances? Your finances? Your health? Or a lack of balance in your life? Consider each difficulty as a message that God has something better and more meaningful for your life. As we release the need to pity ourselves in difficult times and rather use discomfort as the catalyst toward change, we create an opportunity for greater richness and joy in our lives. Discomfort and pressure will always show up. To the extent that, although my life is greater than it’s ever been, there are newer and completely different experiences of discomfort that appear. But, with greater awareness I now recognize that my discomfort shows me that there’s still more for me to see and do in my life. This inspires me to work harder and explore my path with greater curiosity and determination.

Today, find peace with your discomfort. Embrace the stickiness. Ask for its lessons and guidance. Trust that your uneasiness is the vehicle to catapult you to places you’ve never been before. Use discomfort to your advantage in creating a life you dream of.

The Grifter: Trump, The GOP, and the Cult of Businessmen

The candidacy of Donald Trump, and the rise of Trumpismo more generally, have been seen as a kind of Rorschach Test for the condition of the Republican Party. Mostly this has amounted to variations on a “ye reap what ye sow” theme. Personally, I like to think of Trump’s operation being run by Nigel from the movie Spinal Tap: Trumpismo represents everything about the GOP turned up to 11.

Beyond the racism, the bigotry, the bullying, the nativism, the misogyny – I’ll stop there – Trump’s candidacy is of a piece in another way too. However much some prominent Republicans are outraged by Trump, he is the third GOP nominee of the last four to sell himself to the party and the nation as a businessman. In fact, the Republican Party’s disdain of government has been matched by its veneration of businessmen (yes, almost entirely men). So whatever kind of referendum Trumpismo offers on the Republican Party, it certainly reveals a lot about the world of business.

In 2012, Mitt Romney ran away from his career in public service, and especially his tenure as governor of Massachusetts, and flaunted his boda fides as a successful businessman. And without question he made a boatload of money in a private equity firm. He was turn-around guy, he claimed. He found distressed companies and brought them back. He promised to do the same for an American economy that had not fully recovered from the Crash of 2007.

Bain Capital wasn’t a service organization, of course, and people pointed out that private equity firms often found assets to gut, strip, and otherwise sell off. Short-term profits at the expense of. . .well, everything else, including jobs, communities and long-term economic health.

Honest people can disagree over Romney’s work at Bain, but what was truly remarkable was how badly this businessman ran his own campaign. Not just the wooden, awkward public appearances and the flat stump speeches. Behind the scenes, Romney, wizard of high finance, was outclassed by the Obama campaign in data, technology and social media.

In fact, while Bain Capital may have billions under its management, Romney seemed incapable of counting to 270. Faced with polling numbers telling him he was losing, Romney kept believing he would win, in part, I suspect because he was surrounded by people who told him what he wanted to hear. All of which made one wonder: if this is how Romney operated at Bain, maybe one should invest elsewhere.

In 2000, Texas governor George W. Bush offered himself as the nation’s first candidate to hold an MBA. And from Harvard no less! Never mind that Bush’s own track record as a businessman was risible, or that his only success came as part-owner of and principle cheerleader for the Texas Rangers, whose value soared after they moved into a new, publicly-funded stadium. Bush had the business smarts to lead the economy.

We all know exactly where he led it, and several wags noted that Bush embodied the acronym MBA: Mediocre But Arrogant. What do they teach people at the venerable Harvard B-School?!

And so here we are again. Another businessman running for the Republicans promising us that his career as a successful businessman makes him ideal to run the country. Trump clearly suffers from the delusions common among those who live in the cosseted isolation of CEO-land. Surrounded by sycophants and lackeys and yes-men and women, never is heard a discouraging word at Trump central. You would get fired for that kind of insubordination.

Romney, at least, really does seem to have made money. In Trump’s case, it’s hard to tell what “success” means. The more we get to know about Trump Inc. – the byzantine labyrinth of ownerships, subsidiaries, and liabilities; the staggering debt; the pattern of stiffing contractors and his own workers – the more it all begins to look like a Trump Taj Mahal of Mirrors.

We know that Trump made money for himself – though we probably won’t ever know just how much – but beyond that? Trump hasn’t built anything of lasting importance or economic significance. He isn’t a businessman, in the traditional sense. He’s a grifter.

But running a con requires a mark. And in Trump’s case the marks have included major banks, other real estate firms, the state of New Jersey, and the courts. I’m only secondarily astonished at the complexity of Trump’s business shenanigans.

More egregiously, Trump’s wheeling and dealing has relied on a whole host of perfectly reputable enablers, like Deutsche Bank, as the New York Times reported. What does it say about our financial system that it keeps lending him money? Why don’t more business leaders have the courage to call him what he is, like Michael Bloomberg did at the Democratic National Convention? How much confidence should we in private sector institutions given that are repeatedly suckered by The Grifter?

Trump’s ascendancy may speak volumes about the Republican Party. But it pulls a curtain back on the business world as well and what we’re seeing isn’t pretty.

These Underwater Yoga Photos Prove The Practice Is Truly Magical

Looking for a reason to hit the yoga mat today? Take a gander at these stunning photos.

The surreal images, which were snapped by photographer Elena Kalis, feature yoga instructor Britta Jade as she masterfully executes yoga poses under water. They’re a truly majestic display of how yoga can be both athletic and a work of art.

The photos are an inspirational reminder that the practice can be one of the best ways to move your body. Research shows yoga can reduce stress and lower your risk for heart disease. It also can improve your sleep and boost your brain function. Not to mention the fact that yoga can be an excellent form of strength training, which can help maintain a healthy weight.

While not everyone can exactly run off to the crystal shores of a remote island to nail these moves, there are some added perks to taking your yoga practice to the water. Studies suggest being near the ocean can make you calmer and more creative. The sea also puts your brain in a more meditative state.

If you’ve been slacking on a yoga routine (or hesitant to try one at all), take a look at the pictures below. Then check out these healthy reasons to prioritize the practice for additional motivation.

Harvard Biologists Just Demonstrated the Most Extensive Reengineering of a Genome Yet

Researchers at Harvard Medical School have “radically rewritten” the genome of bacteria E. coliThe team has replaced 7 of its 64 codons (3-letter sequences which correspond usually to a single animo acid.) The lab, led by George Church, had already proven it is possible to recode single amino acids, but this project is the first to introduce so many functional changes to a genome.

Donald Trump Is Going To Be Elected

2016-08-21-1471779010-9195561-White_house_south.jpg

Donald Trump is going to be elected President.

The American people voted for him a long time ago.

They voted for him when The History Channel went from showing documentaries about the Second World War to Pawn Stars and Swamp People.

They voted for him when The Discovery Channel went from showing Lost Treasures of the Yangtze Valley to Naked and Afraid.

They voted for him when The Learning Channel moved from something you could learn from to My 600 Pound Life.

They voted for him when CBS went from airing Harvest of Shame to airing Big Brother.

These networks didn’t make these programming changes by accident. They were responding to what the American people actualy wanted. And what they wanted was Naked and Afraid and Duck Dynasty.

The polls may show that Donald Trump is losing to Hillary Clinton, but don’t you believe those polls. When the AC Nielsen Company selects a new Nielsen family, they disregard the new family’s results for the first three months. The reason: when they feel they are being monitored, people lie about what they are watching. In the first three months, knowing they are being watched, they will tune into PBS. But over time they get tired of pretending. Then it is back to The Kardashians.

The same goes for people who are being asked by pollsters for whom they are voting. They will not say Donald Trump. It is too embarassing. But the truth is, they like Trump. He is just like their favorite shows on TV.

Mindless entertainment.

Trump’s replacement of Paul Manafort with Breitbart’s Steve Bannon shows that Trump understands how Americans actually think. They think TV. They think ratings. They think entertainment.

We are a TV based culture. We have been for some time now. The average American spends 5 hours a day, every day, watching TV. After sleep, it is our number one activity.

More shockingly, we spend 8.5 hours a day staring at screens – phones, tablets, computers. And more and more of the content on those devices is also video and TV.

If you spend 5 to 8 hours a day, every day, for years and years doing the same thing it has an impact on you. For the past 40 years we have devoted 5 to 8 hours a day staring at a screen – every day. And we haven’t been watching Judy Woodruff. We have been watching Reality TV shows. That is what we love. That is what we resonate to. The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

The French may love food, the Italians may love opera. What we love is TV. We are TV culture. It defines who we are.

In the 1950s, early television was allowed, with many restrictions, to be an observational guest at political conventions. They were quiet ‘flies on the wall’, carefully and quietly commentating on what they saw way down below. They did not get involved in the process. Today, they ARE the process. Today, political conventions are nothing but carefully directed TV shows. Likewise ‘debates’. They exist only to entertain a TV audience. TV and entertainment now dictate everything political. It is a never-ending show. The biggest Reality Show on air.

And Donald Trump is great TV.

He knows how to entertain.

He understands ratings.

Hillary Clinton is crap TV.

She may be smarter, better prepared, a better politician. It won’t matter. She is terrible entertainment.

That’s just how it is. Depressing, but true.

He is Kim Kardashian. She is Judy Woodruff.

Who gets better ratings?

Who would you rather watch for the next four years?

Honestly…

In 1825, the great French gastronom Brillat de Savarind said, “tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are”. Today, in America, we can safely say, “tell me what you watch and I will tell you what you are”.

And what do we watch?

It isn’t The PBS Newshour.

Angels and Molecules

The other day my wife, Ana, and I went out for a few hours. When we came back, we parked the car, entered through the downstairs garage door, came up to the first floor and into the living room. Where we saw our intrepid dog Ben, standing on the back of the living room couch, gazing out the window. Waiting.

To explain: Ana is the center of Ben’s universe, the sun around which all his planets revolve. She is his oxygen, his A to Z, his why the universe exists. He was waiting for her.

But Ben has gone deaf. He had somehow missed seeing the car’s approach, and hadn’t heard it come down the drive, or the motorized grind of the garage door opening, or our footsteps up the stairs. As far as he knew, we were still gone.

2016-08-19-1471640868-7835203-Ben2.jpg

Moments after I snapped this picture, I clapped, loud enough for him to hear, and he turned his head and saw Ana — and his little dog face broke into an ecstatic OMG, why didn’t someone tell me?! and all was right with the world.

It made me think of Beethoven.

Late in life, Beethoven was attending the premier of his ninth (and final) symphony. “Attending” is perhaps not the right word. Although he was by this time deaf as a board, he strongly felt he should be on hand to guide the musicians along in this huge and enormously challenging composition, so he stood right up there on stage, by the conductor, and gestured like crazy throughout the performance, doing his utmost to shape the right tempi and dynamics and phrasing — even though he could not hear a note.

After the last chord was sounded, the composer stood on the stage, breathing heavily, facing the orchestra. The audience, who had never heard anything like this before (nor, for that matter, had anyone on the planet), erupted into raucous, deafening applause.

The composer was oblivious. He had no idea anyone was even clapping. The mezzo-soprano soloist had to approach him (with tears in her eyes, and can you blame her?) and tug on his arm to get him to turn around and see the thunderous response his music has evoked.

This got me thinking:

What if we’re all like Ben and Beethoven?

What if we are surrounded by all the applause, but just don’t hear it? If the center of our universe, the thing we love most, has already arrived and is standing there watching us, but we just don’t know it yet?

I remember as a teenager, taking a walk one morning in my neighborhood, going blocks and blocks in my quiet suburban town, a Sunday, hardly anyone about. I’d been reading about physics and metaphysics and different thinkers’ understandings of how reality was assembled. I remember stopping, standing, and gazing out along a path down to a field.

It suddenly hit me that I was surrounded by billions, trillions, quadrillions of molecules, atoms, particles, all buzzing and humming and soaring in orbits around each other, vibrating like mad. I was a musician and student of acoustics, and I knew this basic fact of life: vibration makes noise. I was standing in the midst of the most colossal symphony imaginable. I just couldn’t hear it.

Although for those few moments, it felt as if I almost did.

There is an ancient tradition in Bali which holds that a gamelan orchestra, that most mesmerizing of human musical ensembles, doesn’t “make” its music. No, say the Balinese, that rippling stream of rhythm and melody is already happening, already going on, all around us, all the time. The job of the gamelan musicians is not to create the music, but simply to catch it, like a crystal set picking up radio waves and stepping them down to audible form.

What if we are surrounded by symphonies?

What if our ancestors, departed parents, and all those loved ones who have shuffled off before us are in fact standing right beside us, beaming with pleasure at our antics, cheering us on?

What if throngs of angels are stomping and hooting and laughing and shouting, exuberant as a sold-out Bruce Springsteen auditorium just to be there watching us, applauding our every mundane move like a chorus of thunderclaps?

You know, I think they may be.

You can almost hear them, can’t you?

Back to School Means Heavy Backpacks And Back Pain

With school is just around the corner, children will be abandoning the playground and returning to the classroom. With an emphasis on providing a sound education for this young generation, children are given a literal “heavier” workload year after year. This has translated into more books and more accessories, which greatly contributes to the normalcy and reliance on carrying backpacks. However, despite their usefulness, backpacks can cause serious back pain if overloaded or worn improperly.

2016-08-20-1471714844-4735983-Untitled.png

To understand how heavy backpacks contribute to back pain, it’s important to look at the composition of the back. The adolescent spine is composed of 33 bones called vertebrae with discs between them that act as natural shock absorbers. When a heavy backpack is incorrectly placed over a child’s shoulders, the weight of the bag can force the child backwards. Usually, children counteract this force by arching or bending forward at the hips, causing the spine to compress unnaturally and contributing to neck, shoulder and back pain.

2016-08-20-1471714971-3849456-1.png

The best way to prevent lower back pain is to either avoid overstuffing a backpack. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, children should limit their backpack weight to between 10 and 15 percent of their body weight. Backpacks weighing more than this are too heavy to maintain a standing posture. This weight causes children to lean forward, affecting the natural curve in the lumbar and lower back regions resulting in variety of orthopaedic injuries.

Dr. Ebraheim says,
“Kids these days think backpacks are moving libraries, carrying heavier weights back and forth to school and between classes without taking breaks. The weight can cause a variety of back problems including scoliosis. This is a problem not only for the child’s health but also because back pain can interfere with the learning environment. Kids need to feel healthy during the day so they can keep up with their schoolwork injury free.”

Wearing a backing improperly can also cause back injury. Many times children will sling their backpacks over only one shoulder. This uneven distribution of weight causes the child to compensate by leaning to one side. The frequent imbalance causes muscle strain. The problem can be exacerbated if backpacks have tight or narrow straps, as they can interfere with circulation and nerves.

There are, however, some simple ways to prevent your child from developing back pain. First, it’s important to monitor the weight of children’s backpacks to ensure that they are not overloading them. Second, purchase a backpack with wide, padded straps to distribute the load over the shoulders evenly. Backpacks that have waist and additional shoulder straps may also prove beneficial in transferring the load to the hips and preventing slouching. Lastly, it’s important to concentrate the bulk of the weight closest to your child’s body in the middle of the back. This will help your child achieve better posture and balance, while preventing possible falls.

Derailment And How To Manage It

2016-08-19-1471635426-4431424-IMG_4095.JPG

In the world of psychology, derailment describes thought processes that veer off track, go awry, stray from the thought. Like a car that has skidded off the road, the ideas fail to arrive at their destination. In the realm of politics, derailment refers to a tactic by those in power that deflects attention away from complaints about abuse or wrongdoing by introducing an alternative topic. This blog explores derailment as a diversion from a life goal, and how it’s possible to get back on course.

In his journal, the writer John Cheever alluded to a loss of continuity at a critical point in his life. “It seems that in my coming of age I missed a year–perhaps a day or an hour….The consecutiveness of growth has been damaged. But how can I go back and find this moment that was lost?” Although the impact of Cheever’s derailment extends beyond the scope of this blog, his expression highlights the common problem.

In the newly released movie, Florence Foster Jenkins, the heroine, Florence, contracted syphilis from her first husband. As a result, she didn’t bear children and was deprived of a fulfilling family life. That derailment led her to devote her life to singing and supporting the musical world with the fortune she inherited from her father.

We assume an extreme diversion is equivalent to a disaster, but the event may actually represent a chance to recover a “lost” direction or passion. The classic story of The Little Prince (recently made into a popular movie) can be viewed as a metaphorical derailment in the realm of literature. As a young boy, the protagonist of the story drew a boa constrictor swallowing an elephant. But the adults insisted that the drawing resembled a hat. Unimpressed with the child’s skill, the grown-ups redirected him from artistic to practical studies– geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar. “That is why I abandoned, at the age of six, a magnificent career as an artist,” the protagonist says, justifying his profession as a pilot. Years later, his plane crashed in the middle of the desert, and he was visited by a little prince who commanded him to draw. The little prince may well represent the pilot’s imagination or alter ego that harbored his desire to become an artist.

In real life, a patient of mine, Ms. W., experienced a serious depression, a kind of psychological crash. During her hospitalization, she recalled that in her youth, she had aspired to become a singer. In the hospital, she had the opportunity to connect her depression with the long-forgotten ambition. Upon her recovery, she studied voice and became a successful musician.

Conclusion: Although we can’t undo the past, we can recognize a derailment and take action to get back on track.

To Fight Zika Beyond Florida We Need Better Sex Education

In light of the recent news that Zika virus could stay in semen for more than six months ― twice as long as scientists previously though the virus could be detected ― it’s time for the United States to ramp up its focus on the major mechanism for Zika virus transmission after mosquitos: sex.

“For the public health community, Zika represents an unprecedented emergency,” Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association in August.

“Never before, to our knowledge, has a mosquito-borne virus been associated with human birth defects or been capable of sexual transmission,” Frieden wrote. “The effects of brain damage due to microcephaly and consequences of other Zika-related birth defects are likely devastating, lifelong, and costly.”

As Zika virus spreads, with at least 55 countries and territories reporting local transmissions, according to the CDC, and the United States reporting two areas of active transmission in Florida, health officials like Frieden have called for increased safe-sex messaging, even for people outside active Zika zones.

New York City is ramping up its public health messaging on sexually transmitted infections to include Zika virus in coming weeks, The New York Times reports. The campaign will feature posters, fliers, radio and television ads, in addition to deploying community health workers to communicate the risks of sexually transmitted Zika in person.

Florida’s sex ed blunder

But not everyone is making public health a priority. In Florida’s Broward County, which is adjacent to Miami-Dade County, where active Zika transmissions are occurring, abstinence-only rhetoric is trumping public safety ― at least for now.

According to Miami news station WSVN 7News, Broward County removed two AIDS Healthcare Foundation billboards that featured unrolled condoms reminding people that safe sex “prevents Zika transmissions.”

The Fort Lauderdale mayor’s office and tourism board pressured the company to take down the signs, Michael Kahane, a spokesman for the foundation, told the station. “They felt, I guess, that they could impact tourism,” Kahane said. “I find it completely disgusting.”

Still, neither the mayor’s office nor the tourism board is taking credit for the sign’s removal, so it’s unclear who is behind the billboard takedown.

We still don’t know enough to write strong health policies

Using condoms is key to curbing sexually transmitted infection, including Zika virus, but health experts cautioned against overstating Zika’s sexual transmission risk compared to the larger risk of transmission via mosquitos.

Travel-related Zika virus is a major concern. The CDC currently recommends that pregnant women avoid traveling to areas with active Zika transmissions and use condoms or abstain from sex if their partner has traveled to a Zika outbreak area in the last six months.

Dr. Federico Laham, the medical director of infectious disease at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando stressed that it’s also important for doctors to ask pregnant patients about their travel histories, regardless of whether or not the Aedes aegypti mosquito is present in their areas of practice.

One major challenge for health officials trying to curb sexually transmitted Zika in their respective cities is that it’s difficult to craft definitive public health and safe sex recommendations, because no one knows for sure how long Zika virus can stay active ― or remain capable of transmitting infection ― in men’s semen.

That information is “very important if you are trying to craft a prevention method to your community,” Laham told The Huffington Post. “Any couple expecting a child will live with a lot of anxiety. It’s important for health officials to deliver a clear message.”

Zika isn’t the only STI that can hurt unborn babies

For Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, a professor of medicine in the infectious disease and global health divisions at the University of California Los Angeles, focusing on sexually transmitted Zika and the risk it poses to pregnant women misses the point.

“Zika is important, but we need a much broader holistic approach to address infections in pregnant women,” Klausner said.

He cited congenital syphilis ― when a pregnant woman infected with the disease passes it to her child ― as a more common STI, with equally grave consequences. Indeed, congenital syphilis can cause severe illness, miscarriage, stillbirth and early infant death, as well as blindness, nervous system damage and deformity if left untreated.

“When things are common and they occur regularly people forget about them,” Klausner said. “We need to remind people of the day-to-day risks.”

There were 12 cases of congenital syphilis per 100,000 live births in 2014, an increase from 8 per 100,000 live births in 2012, according to the CDC.

Klausner believes defunded health departments and communicable disease programs in the wake of the 2008 recession is making it even harder to address issues like congenital syphilis and Zika virus.

He’s also frustrated by Congress, which failed to pass a Zika bill before leaving for summer vacation this year.

“You can’t trade the health of one population because of ideological views,” he said. “When Congress does come back, it’s going to be important for local constituents to demand a response.”

Harry Reid’s retiring? Enter piles of dark money

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s looming retirement leaves quite the vacuum to fill in Nevada. The contest to replace one of the body’s longest-serving Democrats is labeled a toss-up between former Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto (D) and Republican Rep. Joe Heck. And with Heck running for a promotion, he leaves behind an open playing field for his District 3 seat.

Adding even more intrigue to the races: A whole lot of money coming from undisclosed sources.

The Sagebrush State’s Senate contest has attracted $ 3.4 million so far from groups that don’t identify their donors; that puts the race third in dark money dollars, close behind Pennsylvania and Ohio. The race to fill Heck’s place in southern Nevada has seen nearly $ 2 million spent, the most dark money of any House race and well more than the majority of Senate races.

“Reid wants to preserve his legacy and Democrats want to pick up a majority, and without Nevada, that’s going to be tough to do,” said David Damore, professor of political at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

On the Senate side, Cortez Masto’s campaign has raised slightly more than Heck’s: $ 8.7 million to $ 7.4 million. But adding dark money (and outside money overall) to the mix keeps the scales more balanced. Cortez Masto is facing $ 736,000 worth of attacks from the Kochs’ Americans for Prosperity, the shadowy national security nonprofit SecureAmericaNow.org (headed by Allen Roth, a longtime aide to cosmetics heir Ronald Lauder) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber, which has spent $ 18.7 million total so far this election and $ 2.7 million in Nevada’s Senate race alone, spent $ 1.6 million of that to prop up retired Air Force officer Thomas Heck (who got 3 percent of the vote in the GOP primary) and $ 400,000 supporting Rep. Joe Heck (no relation to Thomas Heck).

The left has provided some help for Cortez Masto. The environment-focused nonprofit League of Conservation Voters has spent $ 710,000 supporting her, and Majority Forward, a group linked to the Senate Majority PAC run by former Dem staffers and advisers connected to Reid, has paid out $ 251,000 attacking Heck.

“This is arguably the most important Senate race this year because it’s the only Senate seat that the Dems have to defend,” said political analyst Jon Ralston.

Super PACs in the race, including Freedom Partners Action Fund on the right and Senate Majority PAC on the left, have added another $ 4.8 million in spending – $ 2.8 million of it to against Cortez Masto and $ 2 million to hurt Heck. Though super PACs are required to disclose their donors, they don’t always do so, as when they accept money from shadowy LLCs.

These totals represent only the spending that has been reported to the FEC. One Nation, a dark money group with deep ties to Crossroads GPS, has spent $ 2.3 million on ads praising Heck, while Concerned Veterans for America, a group funded by the Kochs’ donor network, has run at least one ad showing veterans praising Heck for “leading the charge to fix the VA.”

Last ditch effort in the House

Most of the spending by politically active nonprofits in the race to fill Heck’s seat in southern Nevada saw almost $ 2 million in dark money – the total of which was nearly triple that of the next highest House race, Georgia’s third district.

The activity centered around the crowded June 14 primary, where six Democrats and seven Republicans vied to be their party’s candidate for District 3. Republican and Tea Party darling Danny Tarkanian and Democrat Jacky Rosen fought their way through to the general, but not without opposition from the dark money groups. They mostly sided with failed Republican contender and state Rep. Michael Roberson, who raised $ 829,000 mostly from individuals

“That was a last ditch attempt to save Roberson,” Ralston said. “It was the biggest last minute buy I’ve ever seen.”

The bulk of the dark money originated with the 501(c)(4) Ending Spending, an Alexandria-based group run by J. Joe Ricketts, who founded brokerage firm TD Ameritrade and whose family owns the Chicago Cubs. Ricketts also founded a super PAC called Ending Spending Action Fund. The 501(c)’s general counsel, Brian Baker, is a former adviser to Sen. Bob Dole, R-Kan.

The group, which focuses on the national debt, boosted Roberson with $ 545,000 in positive messaging, and about $ 1 million against his primary opponents Tarkarian and Republican state Rep. Michele Fiore.

Last election cycle, Ending Spending poured the majority of its $ 4.2 million in independent expenditures into Colorado’s Senate race, spending $ 1.8 million to back winning candidate Cory Gardner (R-Color.) and $ 1.5 million against the incumbent, former Democratic Sen. Mark Udall.

Roberson got an additional $ 250,000 bump in support from the 501(c) Main Street Advocacy, linked with former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman’s conservative 501(c)(4), American Action Network.

“Roberson mostly carried the governor’s agenda with him, which included a huge tax increase so he was vulnerable,” Damore said.

As for the campaign committee cash, Tarkanian has raised almost double that of Rosen, $ 942,000 to her $ 558,000. The Republican nominee has had practice raising money to run for public office, coming up short in bids for state Senate in 2004, secretary of state in 2006, Senate in 2010 and District 4 in 2012. This time around, his top donors come from employees at Station Casinos ($ 22,000), Brady Industries ($ 19,000) and Domain.Com Inc. ($ 11,000).

To help turn the open seat blue, Harry Reid handpicked Jacky Rosen, a software developer and president of a synagogue in Henderson, Nev. The first time congressional candidate’s campaign brought in $ 558,000, with top donors including employees from pro-choice PAC EMILY’s List and unions.

But it’s only August. Assuming history repeats itself to some degree, we should expect a lot more money to come. In 2012, less than a fourth of all outside spending had been doled out. Outside group spending for the Nevada Senate race is around $ 11.5 million, and for the congressional seat, close to $ 2 million.

There are also the megadonors to think about. Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, who played in Nevada’s 2012 Senate race, has so far contributed $ 2,700 to Joe Heck’s campaign, and his wife Miriam gave another $ 5,200. Billionaire and CEO of Wynn Resorts, Steve Wynn, has came out in support of Heck, has not yet contributed the funds, at least in traceable ways.

Living Richly With Less

In the past five months, I have thrown away hundreds of items in my apartment. It hasn’t been easy to let go of some things, but it has always been worthwhile. Part of this process has been practical as my girlfriend is moving in with me in a 230 square foot apartment. Most of the process has been personally fulfilling as it has made me feel more free an unencumbered.

Minimalism is not a new concept. It has been made popular by bloggers like Leo Babauta at Zen Habits and it seems to be a trendy thing to do. Some people may do it out of a sense of uniqueness or superiority, but I have my own reasons. Namely, living with less actually helps me to live more richly.

The Art of Living with Essentials

The concept of essentialism is far more appealing to me than minimalism. Instead of getting rid of everything, I get rid of only the things that are non-essential. I strip to the core, find what is most essential and remove everything else. Here are a few benefits and examples of living a rich life within the framework of essentialism:

1. Your possessions own you – Recently I had a conversation with a friend who is making around $ 12,000 a month. It’s a high salary for Texas, but he has so many possessions, most of the money ends up gone by the end of the month.

Many Americans exist with possessions like this. The home mortgage is so expensive that families aren’t free to travel. Boats, cars, and a host of other features people rarely use all cost money and restrict freedom. According to some estimates, Americans spend $ 1.2 trillion on things that are non-essential.

2. We fill up a space no matter the size – According to the LA Times, the average home is filled with 300,000 items. Most people fill up the space that they are given no matter what the size is. If they have a two-car garage, most cannot even fit their cars because of all the other possessions.

This is one of the reasons the tiny house movement has become so strong. My girlfriend and I live in a tiny apartment and may one day purchase a small, efficient home. Even when we visited the coast in Australia we spent time renting a tiny home. It just makes more sense, but it also feels much better. The burden is lifted to be in a smaller space because we can’t fill it with things we don’t need even if we tried.

3. Mental toughness – In life you will face trials, discomfort, and pain. That is the human condition. How we react to such trials and discomfort is dependent on how much practice we have. The reason people become spoiled is because they have consistently never had to deal with hardship and discomfort.

Living with less is sometimes not as comfortable. You might feel cramped, unable to do the things you’d like, and there is no room for luxuries when basic necessities barely fit. But these are all things that inoculate you from mental strain in the future.

The ancient stoic philosopher, Seneca, used to dress in the cheapest clothing and eat nothing so as to practice poverty. It was a way for him to intentionally build his mental toughness despite having plenty.

Radical Essentialism

At first it may seem difficult to be an essentialist, but it might be helpful to burn the boats and go all in. By becoming a radical essentialist you don’t just have a change in your physical surroundings. Sure, you’ll reduce your material possessions and free yourself from their burden, but you also have a psychological change. You will start to see the non-essentials in your life, such as people you’d rather not be involved with, poor habits you engage in, and others. You’ll find this to be a movement that changes the way you live and the way that you think.

10 Staggering Stats Show How Mental Health Care Fails People Of Color

Nearly one in five American adults will deal with a mental health issue in a given year. While research and advocacy have come a long way when it comes to mental health, there’s still one area that is highly under-addressed: How mental illness affects people of color.

There has been some progress in recent years when it comes to giving minority mental health a public platform. Celebrities like Kerry Washington, Demi Lovato and Wayne Brady have shared their own experiences with mental health issues and stressed the importance of seeking treatment. New York Jets player Brandon Marshall is also generating awareness through his mental health initiative Project 375, with plans to promote the project as the NFL season starts this fall.

But there’s still a long way to go. Ongoing stigma and lack of access to health care act as barriers for anyone with a mental health condition, but experts argue there’s a particular disparity when it comes to minorities. And that can contribute to people not receiving proper support or treatment in order to feel better.

A new study published in the International Journal of Health Services only further corroborates this fact. Researchers found that black and Hispanic young people were less able to get mental health services than white children and young adults. This happens despite the fact that rates of mental illness are generally consistent across all ethnicities, Kaiser Health News reported.

Unfortunately, this new study is just one example of a barrier people of color face when it comes to mental health. We gathered just a few staggering statistics that put it all into perspective. Check them out below:

20

The percentage by which African American adults are more likely to experience mental health issues than the rest of the population.

40

The percentage of Native Americans who die by suicide that are between the ages of 15 to 24 who die by suicide. Native Americans have the highest rate of young adult suicide of any ethnicity.

10.3

The number of Hispanic men out of every 100,000 who died by suicide in 2014, a figure that has remained consistent since 1999 with no sign of improving.

27.4

The number of Native American and Alaska Native men out of every 100,000 who died by suicide in 2014. This rate increased by 38 percent from 1999.

8.6

The percentage of Asian American adults who sought mental health treatment in 2010. Nearly 18 percent of the general population nationwide reached out for services in the same year.

89

The percent increase in the suicides of Native American and Alaska Native women from 1999 to 2014. The rate of suicide among Native American and Alaska Native women is approximately nine of every 100,000 people, up from five per every 100,000 people.

62

The percent of non-Hispanic black individuals with depression who had a major depressive episode in 2012. Despite the fact that this figure represents the majority of black individuals with depression, only a small percentage see a mental health professional to help manage their condition.

2.3

The percentage of black or Hispanic young people who saw a mental health specialist in a given year, compared with 5.7 percent of white children and young adults. It’s estimated that one in five people ages 13 to 18 have or will have a mental illness at some point in their life.

25

The percentage of African Americans who seek treatment for a mental health issue, compared to 40 percent of white individuals. The reasons for this dropoff include misdiagnosis by doctors, socioeconomic factors and a lack of African American mental health professionals.

90

The percent of all suicides in which mental illness plays a role.

Remember: Mental illness is not a character flaw. It’s not something a person can just simply “get over.” It’s not a person’s fault. Mental health issues can be anything from dealing with particularly stressful periods to something more serious like depression or schizophrenia.

If you’re struggling with your mental health, look into treatment options ― because everyone should be able to live a happy and healthy life.

If you ― or someone you know ― need help, please call 1-800-273-8255 for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. If you are outside of the U.S., please visit the International Association for Suicide Prevention for a database of international resources.
